Since 1986, Portugal's foreign policy has dealt almost exclusively with the consequences of membership in the EU, from which the country has greatly benefited. It is a committed member of NATO, although its relative strategic importance has declined as a result of Spanish membership. Relations with the former African colonies are occasionally turbulent and remain a high priority, as do those with Brazil. Relations with China over the return of Macao to the latter in 1999 are cordial.
